Child protection proceedings move fast, carry high emotional weight, and can have lasting consequences for parents, caregivers, and children. The Ministry of Social Services has broad discretion to intervene when there are concerns about a child’s safety. That discretion is essential to protect children — but it also means decisions may be made that families strongly disagree with, or don’t fully understand.

Gryba Gratton represents clients in child protection and child and family services matters in Saskatoon and across Saskatchewan. Our approach is steady, thorough, and focused on practical outcomes — with clear guidance through a process that often feels overwhelming.

Who we represent

Depending on the file and the circumstances, we may assist:

  • Parents and caregivers responding to a child protection proceeding
  • Children and youth who require independent legal representation
  • Clients involved in placement, access, and related child protection issues
  • Individuals who do not qualify for Legal Aid and need private counsel
  • Clients appointed counsel through court or through referral/appointment processes where applicable

Legal Aid assists many parents in this area. Where Legal Aid is not available, families are often left trying to navigate a complex system on their own. We can assist as private counsel or in other appointed capacities where appropriate.

Independent representation for children and youth

Children and youth deserve meaningful participation and a direct voice in decisions that affect their lives. Questions about independent legal representation for a child or youth in care can be directed to the Advocate for Children and Youth or the Counsel for Children Office.

Our office accepts appointments from the Counsel for Children Office on a regular basis to provide representation to children and youth involved in child protection proceedings.

Referrals for children and youth in care

To request a lawyer for a child or youth involved in a child protection proceeding, a referral may be made through the appropriate process. Where a referral form is required, we can point you to the correct resource and confirm what information is needed.

If you’re involved in a child protection matter and need legal representation, contact Gryba Gratton to request a consultation.
